The Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh), through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), officially opened the 3-day Ubi Festival 2024 on December 18, 2024, at Plaza Rizal, Tagbilaran City. Themed “Tatak Ubing Bol-anon, Palambuon”, the festival celebrates the province’s enduring connection to the purple yam, or ubi, a root crop deeply intertwined with Bohol’s identity, history, and culture.

UBI: A SYMBOL OF BOHOL’S HERITAGE AND RESILIENCE

Ubi holds a special place in Boholano culture as a symbol of resilience. Known as the “savior crop,” its discovery during pre-Hispanic times provided sustenance and alleviated hunger among Boholanos. Today, ubi remains a staple food in Bohol, prized for its distinct taste, versatility, and long shelf life, while also inspiring diverse culinary creations.

As the country’s leading producer of ubi, Bohol owes much of this achievement to the dedication of its farmers, who cultivate this crop as a vital source of livelihood. The Ubi Festival serves as a platform to celebrate their contributions, highlight the province’s leadership in ubi production, and promote awareness about the crop’s economic, historical, and cultural importance.

The celebration also aligns with Bohol’s designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark. By spotlighting the role of sustainable agriculture, such as ubi farming, the festival reinforces the province’s commitment to preserving its agro-ecological systems while honoring its cultural heritage.

OPENING CEREMONY AND SUPPORTIVE MESSAGES

Provincial Agriculturist Liza Quirog, MNSA, welcomed participants and shared the rationale for the event. Tagbilaran City Mayor Jane Yap emphasized the symbolism of ubi, saying, “The very important symbolism of Ubi is resilience, and that is the character of Boholanos.”

Messages of support were delivered by BM Nathaniel Binlod, representing Vice Governor Tita Baja, who assured the unwavering support of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for farmers. Representatives from congressional offices, including Atty. Abel Damalerio, JP Maslog, and Rey Casiñas, affirmed their commitment to the growth of ubi farmers, growers, and entrepreneurs.

Regional Executive Director Angel Enriquez of the Department of Agriculture Region 7, represented by DA-Bohol Extension Center Chief Felix Tubiano, highlighted ongoing efforts to develop ubi production and kinampay varieties through agricultural research and innovation.
